Wizards at War

I think that I am in the minority when I say that I have liked the past few books, including this one. I thought that there were a number of parallels that could be drawn between this novel and Native Tongue, the most apparent being that Memeki was waiting for a word that would allow/inspire her to become the Hesper, thus changing forever the nature of the universe and the battle between good and evil , and by creating a new language the Lines women changed their own reality into something that was barely recognizable.

There were several instances in the novel where characters (Memeki, Ronan, Sker'ret, Roshaun, Ponch, etc) were asked to make a choice, either embrace their destiny, fulfill their responsibilities, be more, or turn away and keep the status quo. How does Duane's presentation of the ideas of choice, becoming, etc. compare to those presented in Giant's Star or Grass?
