Comment: Not one of my favorite LeGuin books. I liked the characters, and Shevek's back-story, the not really interested in the "current" goings-on.
Question: One of the complaints against Shevek's work was that it seemed to have no use to his society; it put food in no one's mouth nor made anyones life any easier. Can we justify science and discovery for their own sake, or must they have some discernable use from the start?
