I was also a little hesitant to believe that these kids were so young. Not only were they smart and had the ability to create complex strategies, but in the case of Ender he was also able to reflect on things he had done and analyze his character. This is an emotional maturity that is not usually reached until late teens and even for some early twenties.
Besides showing intelligence and that these children were trained from such an early age, why would Card make these characters so young?
